I worked in politics for nearly two decades – regularly and consciously seeking out the opportunities where government, local and national, can work with business to grow the economy.
With detailed knowledge of the political, policy and regulatory framework at both Westminster and Holyrood, my focus at 56° North is to provide political insight and strategic policy advice to clients to help them solve complex problems and engage constructively on the policies that impact their business.
I was the Member of Parliament for Aberdeen South between 2015-17 – serving on the front benches of the House of Commons as spokesperson for Energy and Climate Change and then Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Before that I was a councillor in Aberdeen taking on a number of senior roles including council leader – the youngest in the UK at the time.
I’ve served as a Special Adviser to two First Ministers of Scotland – working in government with ministers and civil servants on legislation, policy development and communications across a range of areas including energy, finance, economic policy, planning and local government. Between 2022 and 2024 I was the Scottish Government’s Head of Policy taking a leading role in the development, delivery and communication of the government’s policy agenda.
And… I was a non-pointless answer (i.e. at least one person knew who I was) on quiz show Pointless back in 2015 in a round where contestants were asked to name newly elected SNP MPs – I’m assuming they must have asked my mum by accident…
